Transcatheter embolization of congenital coronary fistules

Abstract

Congenital coronary artery fistulas are uncommon anomalies. Surgical ligation has been the conventional treatment. The recent development of interventional procedures in congenital heart disease and the increasing use of embolization techniques encouraged us to perform transcatheter closure in two children seven and eleven years old, using multiple Gianturco coils. Successfull occlusion of the defect was accomplished by ecocardiography and coronariography in both cases avoiding the need for surgical correction. Our preliminary results suggested that the transcatheter embolization technique of such lesions is an useful and effective alternative against surgery.
