Cardiac Sarcoidosis: Echocardiographic Findings and Therapy

Abstract

A 45-years-old female patient with a history of pericardial effusion was hospitalized due to dyspnea and syncope secondary to ventricular tachycardia. The echocardiogram showed left ventricular enlargement and severe systolic dysfunction with septal posteromedial and inferomedial aneurysms. Normal coronary arteries were observed upen catheterization. Chest computed tomography revealed pulmonary infiltration. Endomyocardial biopsy performed due to suspicion of primary cardioyopathy confirmed the diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis. Treatment with methylprednisone for 15 months resulted in an improvement in the ventricular function, confirmed by echocardiography. The described case highlights the echocardiographic signs of cardiac sarcoidosis and the utility of corticosteroid therapy.
