Technological advances and expanded clinical indications have led to a steady increase in the use of transtelephonic electrocardiogram monitors since their development more than 25 years ago. They are particularly valuable in the diagnosis and management of patients with paroxysmal supraventricular arrhythmias, where transtelephonic electrocardiogram monitors have been shown to be more cost-effective than Holter monitors. Follow-up of patients with permanent pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators routinely incorporates the use of transtelephonic electrocardiogram monitors. Clinical indications continue to expand and new devices are being developed to improve outpatient care of patients who have arrhythmias and/or ischemic heart disease.
