Objective
The aim of the study was the evaluation of clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing bypass surgery in Argentina.he study included patients admitted to 41 surgical centers from our country.
Result
The mean age for the 1045 men and 248 women were 60.95 ± 9.34 and 64.26 ± 9.46 respectively. The in-hospital mortality was 11.76% (152 patients) The multivariate odds ratios for in hospital mortality were: age more than 70 years: 2.28 (95% CI: 1.51-3.43); congestive heart failure: 2.18 (95% CI: 1.14-4.19); prior bypass surgery: 3.04 (95% Ch 1.47-6.27);renal failure: 2.18 (95% CI: 1.03-4.63); chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: 2.18 (95% CI: 1.22-3.92);left main stenosis: 1.84 (95% CI: 1.16-2.90); moderate left ventricular dysfunction: 1.77 (95% CI: 1.14-2.75) and severe left ventricular dysfunction: 3.95 (95% CI: 2.26-6.92); urgent priority of surgery: 2.48 (95% CI: 1.45-4.25) and emergent priority of surgery: 2.51 (95% CI: 1.12-5.64). The following complications were associated with in-hospital death: Q wave myocardial infarction, bleeding, low cardiac output, renal failure, ventricular or supraventricular arrhythmia, stroke, infections, obstructive and hypersecretive bronchi pathology, heart block requiring pacemaker and coronary reoperation.
Conclusions
These are the first data that shows the morbidity and mortality predictors of patients undergoing by-pass surgery in Argentina and provide an opportunity to make valid inferences about the quality of healthcare system.
