Quantification of regional myocardial function is an important goal in clinical cardiology. In order to achieve this, tissue Doppler imaging has been introduced about ten years ago. Moreover, recent developments in this tissue Doppler technique have resulted in strain rate and strain imaging, providing quantitative information on the characteristics of myocardial deformation. This article provides an introduction to the physical principles and the clinical use of these echocardiographic techniques.
