Abstract

Background

Coronary surgery risk expressed as expected mortality, tries to serve as a quality standard to com-pare the results of coronary surgery in surgical centers. The recently appeared CONAREC III score attempts to be used as a predictor of coronary surgery results in Argentina's centers.

Objective

To analize the validity of the CONAREC III risks core for quality testing of the results of coronary surgery in a surgical center.

Method

In-hospital mortality of 293 patients (group A) undergoing coronary surgery was calculated. Results were compared with those of expectedmortality accordingto the CONAREC III risk score.

Results

In-hospital mortality for group A was 3.7% (versus CONAREC, 11.7%, p<0.001). Expected mortality divided for score risk groups was

(...)

Conclusions

Though CONAREC III risk score was simple to use, it did not predict the coronary surgery risk of our population. This lack of prediction could be due to some difference in populations compared, to shorter extracorporeal circulation times or to the simplification of postoperative care.
