Between september 1990 and april 1991, we attempted transcatheter umbrella closure, using the Rashkind PDA ocluder, in four patients with patent ductus arteriosus. Four 17 mm diameter devices were successfully placed in the ductus (internal diameter range 2 to 6 mm) without complications. A residual shunt was present on the immediate postocclusion aortogram in two patients but in only one continued at the six months follow up. Catheter occlusion of the patent ductus arteriosus using the Rashkind umbrella appears to be a safe and effective method of nonsurgical management in experienced hands.
